If you’ve ever watched TV in the U.S., you’ve probably seen GEICO’s gecko pop up in an ad. They’re everywhere. But beyond the catchy commercials, how’s GEICO really performing in 2025? I wanted to find out. I looked at rates, discounts, what real customers are saying, and recent trends in insurance. Here’s what I found.

Have you compared your insurance rates recently, or are you sticking with the same company?

What GEICO Offers & How It Stacks Up
  • Affordable coverage: GEICO often comes in cheaper than many big-name competitors. A full-coverage policy averages around $1,731/year, and minimum coverage is about $517/year. For me, that’s a big reason to stuck with them in the past.
  • Lots of discounts: Whether you’re a student with good grades, a homeowner, or in the military, there’s probably a discount for you. Even paperless billing and anti-theft devices can knock your rate down.
  • Digital convenience: Their app is surprisingly easy to use. I once got a quote in less than five minutes and could see which discounts applied. No need to talk to anyone if you don’t want to.
Have you tried GEICO’s app for quotes? Was it straightforward, or did you get lost in all the options?

Real Customer Stories & Highlights
  • One GEICO customer shared that after six years, their premium went up roughly $20/month each year. They still stick with GEICO because the claims process has always been smooth.
  • Another driver in California with a perfect record was surprised when rates increased anyway. They ended up shopping around for alternatives. This happens more than you’d think.
  • Military members often get special rates. Friends of mine in the Reserves have saved hundreds using GEICO’s military discount.
  • Parents often use the “good student” discount for their teens. One mom told me it cut her daughter’s premium almost in half.

If your rates kept increasing steadily, would you stay with GEICO or look for a cheaper option?

What GEICO Does Well & What Customers Complain About
  • Pros: Prices are usually lower than average. Online tools work well, and customer service gets decent reviews. The discounts can really add up for the right drivers.
  • Cons: Some high-risk areas see faster increases. Even if you have a clean record, you might notice your premium creeping up. And, depending on your location, there may not be a local agent nearby.
  • Coverage quirks: Certain extras, like gap insurance, may be pricey or unavailable. This isn’t a deal-breaker for everyone, but worth checking if you want that coverage.
  • Renewal surprises: Some customers report higher renewal notices even when nothing has changed. It can feel frustrating, especially if you’ve been a loyal customer.

Recent Trends & Regulatory Signals
  • GEICO is using telematics more often, tracking driving habits to adjust rates. Some drivers like this; others feel it’s intrusive.
  • Auto insurance rates across the U.S. are rising slower than previous years. 2025 hikes are around 7.5% on average, which is better than the spikes in 2023 and 2024.
  • In states like California, some GEICO customers are seeing scrutiny over rate hikes, showing that insurers aren’t immune from oversight.
  • Internally, GEICO has been keeping costs down, which could help slow future increases without sacrificing service.
Would you consider using telematics to lower your rate, or would it feel like your car is spying on you?

Who GEICO Might Be Best For in 2025
  • Drivers in lower-risk areas who qualify for multiple discounts.
  • People who don’t need a lot of in-person help and are comfortable using apps.
  • Military families, students, or anyone with a clean driving record who wants to save money.
  • Anyone looking for affordable full coverage without extras like high-limit gap insurance.
Do you prefer online support for insurance, or do you still want a local agent?

Final Thoughts

GEICO is still a solid choice in 2025 if your priorities are cost, discounts, and managing your policy digitally. Rates are rising in some areas, but if you use discounts wisely and avoid unnecessary extras, you can still get excellent value. Personally, I’ve stayed with GEICO for years because of the convenience and predictable service.

Switched to GEICO last summer, saved a good chunk. Like $35 less a month compared to Allstate. Claims took forever though. It felt like I was waiting ages. But it's still preferable

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ 4/5

GEICO is fine if you only care about price. But man their customer service is rough. Half the time it felt like I was talking to a script.

My rating is : ⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ 3/5
