How many types of stocks are there?

Stocks take on two major forms. The common stocks and the preferred stocks. Common stock allows voting privileges and possible dividend distribution to its shareholders, whereas the preferred stock provides fixed dividends, but no rights to vote in most instances. Stocks can also be classified into different characteristics like growth stocks, value stocks, blue-chip stocks and penny stocks.

Preferred shares can do very well if you want consistent income but they are not as flexible as the common stocks.
